Long Eaton — The UK's Upholstery Capital

Long Eaton's story as Britain's furniture capital began in the early 20th century, when the decline of the lace industry left the town's mills empty and its workforce ready for something new. What followed was one of the great industrial transformations in British manufacturing history.

The foundations were laid by a handful of pioneering companies — Buoyant Upholstery, Wade Spring & Upholstery, Elson & Robbins, Everest Furniture and Gimson & Slater — whose craftspeople went on to found many of the great Long Eaton brands that followed. Wade Upholstery alone supplied furniture for the first-class rooms on both the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth ocean liners.

Today Long Eaton is home to over 50 upholstery companies, generating over £300 million a year for the local economy. In 2015 Long Eaton was officially recognised as the UK Centre of Quality Upholstery Manufacturing. The furniture made here has always found its way to the best retailers in the country — from Harrods to 5-star hotels, super yachts to embassies worldwide.

When you own Long Eaton furniture, you own a piece of that tradition — and it's worth every effort to preserve it.

Why Long Eaton Furniture Is Worth Preserving

  • 100+ year heritage of quality upholstery manufacturing
  • Hardwood frames built to last generations
  • Hand-crafted by skilled artisans — not mass produced
  • Supplied to Harrods and the world's finest retailers
  • Exported to 60+ countries — a worldwide reputation
  • The frame outlasts the covers — replacement covers give these pieces a second, third or fourth life
  • Historic brands can't be replaced — if your furniture was made by a brand that no longer exists, new covers are the only way to preserve it

The Smart Alternative to New Furniture

The hardwood frames in Long Eaton furniture are engineered to outlast the covers by decades. When the fabric starts to show its age, the smart move is replacement covers:

  • Save thousands — replacement covers typically cost 10–20% of new furniture
  • Keep what matters most — the frame, springs and cushioning are the valuable parts. Keep them
  • Update your room's style — new covers can completely transform a piece and a room
  • Better for the environment — extending the life of quality furniture is always the greener choice
  • Historic brands can't be replaced — if your furniture is from a brand that no longer exists, new covers are the only way to preserve it
